2009 Web Design trends

These are my design predictions for 2009
It has been a while since the hand crafted look took over from the glass and gloss of web 2.0 as the style deriguer. So what next?
The credit crunch and looming recession have been been affecting us in all manner of ways, though mostly in our pockets and our confidence. The bargain basement style may take hold as it does every January but as a more medium term approach. Some say that during tough economic times we see less innovation as corporations look for safe and measurable options. The internet certainly caters for measurable though the internet is a recession virgin and the effects of the wider economy on the internet are as yet unknown.
The time for playfulness in design has ended, at last for the meantime, though at the same time people’s trust in large companies has been shattered and our dependence on government services is increasing. It may be that a more personal approach may take shape in the design work of the next year or so. The Jacob Nielsens of the world with their simple functional sites may have a bumper year in 2009 as design is pared back in favour of scientific approaches to usability and ROI.
I suspect that by the summer designers will want to start creating more optimistic styles and springtime may be a strong theme for the year.
